Classic Night at the Movies

Raton Crimestoppers will be having a Classic Night at the Movies Fundraising Event on June 26, 2024 at 7:00p.m. at the Historic Shuler Theater in Raton, NM.
We will be showing Star Wars "A New Hope" and will have door prizes as well as a costume contest for anyone who wants to show up in costume. $1 donation minimum to be entered for a door prize. All donations will be used for a cash reward if tip information given leads to an arrest, recovery of stolen property, and/or confiscation of illegal drugs, as well as operating costs for our Non-Profit Organization.
Come out for a great movie and help support our organization.

Fatal Crash Involving the Rail Runner in Albuquerque
Albuquerque, NM – On March 5, 2024, at around 10:00 am, New Mexico State Police investigated a crash at Osuna Road NW and the train tracks near Edith involving the Rail Runner train and a Ford pickup truck.
The initial investigation indicated that the Ford pickup truck was traveling west on Osuna, and the Rail Runner was traveling north towards Osuna. For unknown reasons, the Ford pickup truck drove under the railroad crossing arm and was struck by the train on the driver’s side. The driver of the truck, Phillip Raby, 90, of Albuquerque, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene. No injuries were reported on the train.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which the New Mexico State Police are investigating with assistance from the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.

James Valdez is hereby promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief. James has served in the capacity of Captain for the last 9 years with a total time of service to the City of Raton of 23 years. Deputy Chief Valdez is an invaluable part of our team, the City of Raton and its citizens are well served by him in this position.
Cory Coca is hereby promoted to the rank of Captain. Cory has served in the capacity of Patrol Sergeant for the last 9 years with a total time of service to the City of Raton of 19 ½ years. Captain Coca is another invaluable part of our team; the City of Raton and its citizens are well served by him in this position.

The Raton Police Department is requesting public assistance, in locating Brandon Castellano a Trinidad resident.
Castellano escaped police custody in the early morning hours and is wanted for burglary.
Castellano is 5'08, weighs approximately 155 lbs. and was last seen wearing a black jacket with a grey hood and green Carhart pants.

Swearing in of Municipal Judge

On December 29, 2023, Christine “Chrissy” Margaret Piancino was sworn in as the new municipal judge in Raton, the position previously occupied by Judge Roy Manfredi. Judge Piancino had been Judge Manfredi’s clerk since October 4, 2018. During an interview Judge Piancino said she “is honored to have been elected to this position and will do her best to serve all those who come before her and the laws to the best of her ability.”

On behalf of the Raton Police Department, we would like to congratulate and welcome back from the NM Law Enforcement Academy, our two newly Certified Officers.
Officer Rochelle Jackson and Officer Richard Garcia successfully completed their NM Police Officer Certification training, which began in July at the Law Enforcement Academy, in Santa Fe. Both Officer’s finished near the top of their class academically, maintaining grade point averages within the 90th percentile.
Officer Jackson was selected as a Squad Leader; and was also appointed to the Honor Guard representing class #206.

The Colfax County DWI Planning Council and Colfax County Health Council Collaborative meeting was held on September 13, 2023, at the CYFD office. The meeting has been held as there has been mutual benefits for both groups and to bring focus to the needs of the community in the areas of mental health and substance abuse. The Colfax County Health Council has updated that they will focus on mental health being the primary focus of the Health Council goals for this year and bringing more awareness to the community about the mental health issues within the county. The DWI program gave their reports on prevention efforts to bring to Colfax County schools to educate students on making better choices, how to handle peer pressure, and other challenges they may face. Compliance information was provided on the average number of DWI probation clients handled per month, amount of new probation clients recently sentenced, number of active absconders and successful releases from probation. Those in attendance for this meeting and represented were New Mexico State Police, NM Department of Health, DWI Planning Council, R.A.I.N, Children’s Workshop, Celebrate Recovery, and the Colfax County Health Council.

Burglary Raton Pharmacies
November 17, 2022
On 11/17/2022 between the hours of 0100 and 0400 both pharmacies in Raton (Medicine Shoppe/Mesa Pharmacy) were burglarized. Two individuals entered both businesses and took an undisclosed amount of narcotics from each. Some details of the incident are purposely withheld for the integrity of the investigation but it is believed that more than the two suspects may be involved. The Raton Police Department is diligently working the case and have also reached out to the DEA for assistance. Any and all information you may have could be valuable to the investigation. This incident not only affects the businesses but the community as a whole, the elderly, infants and community members of all ages that rely on these pharmacies for their medication. With that being said, if you have information you can remain anonymous but do the right thing and send in your tips.
